Visitor's Guide

Client: Raton Chamber & Economic Development Council Raton, New Mexico

This is one of 35 pieces I wrote for the chamber’s 2004 and 2006 Visitor’s Guides to highlight places and events tourists might like to see in the northeast-New Mexico area.

Folsom Falls
The Capulin Volcano

Let’s get ready to rumble!
Take a trip into a giant volcano

Picture this: You’re enjoying a leisurely drive across languid Johnson Mesa. You gaze down at rolling hills and rocky, tree-lined mountains embedded with the signature colors of the Southwest. Suddenly you’re swept away by the sight of the Sierra Grande, the largest single mountain in the United States.

Take this drive, and it won’t take long to learn why the Folsom/Capulin area of northeast New Mexico is known as one of the prettiest spots on earth.

In Folsom, tour the historic Stone Church and Folsom Museum. Visit the site where in 1926 an arrowhead was discovered that scientists believe prove man’s existence in the New World at least 10,000 years ago. Turn a corner and there’s Folsom Falls, a lavish, spring-fed waterfall that will amaze you with its sharpness and beauty.

At the Capulin Volcano National Monument, set off on a one-mile walk around the crater rim of this massive volcano. At 8,182 feet, lift your eyes and see points in Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, Texas and, of course, New Mexico.

If you want more excitement than rim-walking, this is one of the few places in the world where you can actually walk right into a volcano.

A self-guided tour takes you to the vent at the bottom of the crater, a trip you won’t soon forget. And no worries—you missed the last eruption by about 60,000 years.

Folsom & Capulin
Experience it once, remember it for a lifetime
